The works Christmas party

The Youth Centre (NCYC) had their annual Christmas Party and joined it with  a farewell to two young Kiwi volunteers who have spent 12 months here. Anna from Sri Lanka/UK/NZ and Mattie from Wellington  have done brilliant work and really joined in with the young people.
It was a Christmas picnic with a difference but some things were the same -- it rained so a plastic sheet was raised and tied down with the bark stripped from a pole. The smoke from the fire got into everyone's eyes where ever you were standing. There was a great pile of food that gradually disappeared ....... and fun was had by all.

It was held at Matavulu solwata ie the mouth of the Matevulu river. it was a lovely spot with cool fresh water streaming down and mixing with warm tropical salt water.
First came the speeches (and the smoke)

then came the magic Santa presents which was often accompanied by baby powder or squirts of cheap perfume.

Everyone enjoyed it so now was the time to eat. Huge quantities of food appeared supplemented by cake and even a bottle of bubbly
After lunch some took the opportunity for a quick snooze  or just a chat

whilst others took to the water

A group of sixth form girls were having a picnic next to us and then went off into the river to play on a tree trunk. The surreal appearance of a black Father Christmas who proceeded to disburse sweeties by the handful had us all in stitches.

Then it was time to clear up and the mothers busied themselves whilst the youngster got into a dance routine.
A lovely day with much happiness.
